Things to do
The indigenous kloof in front of the house and the river area are home to many birds. Add to our list of raptors (including a pair of fish eagles that can often be heard overhead), seed- eaters, sunbirds, and water birds seen on the property. You may also spot bushbuck, grysbok or other wildlife in the bush and on the hillside.
Swim in the river on a hot day or take out one of our double kayaks in the early morning stillness. Launch your power-boat from our slipway and tour the river or enjoy skiing for many kilometers on one of the country’s finest water-skiing rivers.
Watch the sun or moon rising and setting over the river or enjoy the clear night skies away from the city lights while braaing or making pizza outside.
Go for an evening run or cycle along the gravel roads through the farmlands.
Take a short boat trip downriver out of the Sanctuary, or drive to the mouth, and fish for kob, grunter, elf or leervis, which are abundant in the river.
For variety, take a 10 minute trip into Stilbaai to
enjoy the many attractions the town has to offer. These include:
Beautiful sandy beaches
Whale watching
Deep-sea fishing trips from the harbour
Public slipway further upstream
Sporting facilities including a 9-hole golf course
Horse riding in the summer season
Walks along the beautiful coastline and dune trails
The area itself is of great archaeological interest, being the site of the Blombos cave where the world famous Blombos Ochre was found, and of ancient shell middens and fish traps which can be viewed at low tide and are still in operation today.
At the Tourism Bureau in the Palinggat Homestead there is a natural spring where eels can be fed daily.
Other attractions in the area are
Jongensfontein, a favourite surfing and angling spot 11 km from Stilbaai
The Pauline Bohnen and Geelkrans Nature Reserves
Various farms along the river such as The Wild Olive and Olywen Houdt, both of which are interesting to visit and serve delicious meals
